Maya Angelou was a poet, civil rights activist, and prolific writer from the United States.

She is the author of seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, plays, movies, and television shows during the course of her 50-year career. She earned hundreds of accolades and more than 50 honorary degrees before her death in 2014.

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, her most renowned autobiography, is about her life and experiences before the age of seventeen. Angelou worked as a sex worker, a nightclub dancer, a fry cook, an actor, and a journalist throughout his early years.

Through her role in the civil rights struggle, she became acquainted with Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X and was named the first Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University in 1982.

At President Bill Clinton’s inauguration in 1993, Maya Angelou presented her poem “On the Pulse of Morning.”
